The HunCERTalks meetup held on October 15, 2025, at HUN-REN SZTAKI addressed key challenges in industrial cybersecurity, lessons learned from real-world projects, the convergence (or lack thereof) of IT and OT environments, and what it is like for a company to experience an actual cyberattack. Since autumn 2024, this meetup series has typically explored various aspects of cybersecurity on a monthly basis.
József Tóth, Business Development Director at Hepenix Ltd., spoke about the need for organizational maturity when implementing advanced robotics solutions in corporate environments, and highlighted how cybersecurity failures can sometimes stem from seemingly minor issues. As a real-life example, he recalled a cyberattack the company suffered years ago, which was successfully contained, noting that it was largely due to rapid response that irreversible damage was avoided.
Gyula Szabó, researcher at HUN-REN SZTAKI, presented insights from real industrial and research projects, including a honeypot system designed to lure cybercriminals through decoy targets. He also addressed the mindset-related aspects of industrial challenges, emphasizing that technological preparedness is only sufficient until criminals interfere with real, physical processes—which may sometimes escape attention.
Patrik Radványi, developer at HUN-REN SZTAKI, discussed the meeting point of IT and OT environments, providing a detailed overview of the differences and points of friction between the two approaches. He explained that while traditions and practices in IT change rapidly and are often loosely defined, operational processes tend to have deep-rooted foundations. As a result, the two groups do not always easily understand each other—making one of the greatest challenges of industrial cybersecurity not a technical issue, but rather an educational and mindset-related one.
